Happy Birthday ( お誕生日おめでとう!)

Happy Birthday In Japanese
This article is going to talk about the basic setups of having a birthday celebration in the Japanese Culture showing some key words and also events that are done.

This first word that needs to be mentioned is Tanjobi Omedeto Gozaimasu what this means is the Happy Birthday in Japanese. The next big term used is domo arigato gozaimasu which is said as a thank you. When at a birthday party those two key words are the big ones that will be said the most often.

Now on to some key events that are done at a Japanese style birthday party, the first is that some parties for kids they will set up a watermelon on the ground and blind fold the individual and spin them around about ten times and hand them a pole and the individual will then walk around outside until they find the watermelon and then try to hit it.

A second celebration item is that in the Japanese culture they usually don’t have a big meal at the birthday they will have a light meal and then usually celebrate the birthday with a larger cake for everyone to enjoy.
Another game that may be played at a Japanese style birthday party is that the parent will make clues and hide clues until they get to the major birthday surprise which is usually a small bag of candy for each participant at the birthday party.

The next part of the birthday party is more western known and that is when the birthday child will open their presents around the group and everyone will sing Happy Birthday but will use that key phrase from above Tanjobi Omedeto Gozaimasu. Then the child will open the presents and everyone will share their Domo Arigato Gozaimasu for expressing thanks for the gifts.

The final thing done at a Japanese birthday party which is quite unique compared to a western birthday party is the birthday child will give a small Thank You bag to each person for attending his or her birthday party and this is usually done at the end of the party as everyone is ready to depart from the party.
